چکیده

An Additive Double-Logarithmic Consumer Demand System Lester D. Taylor University of Arizona Despite obvious theoretical shortcomings, the double-logarithmic function, because of ease of estimation and generally superior fit, is often the demand function of choice in applied demand analysis. However, the drawback to double-logarithmic demand functions is that they are not theoretically plausible, in that they are neither consistent with an underlying utility function nor additive (in the sense of satisfying the budget constraint). The purpose of this paper is to introduce a doublelogarithmic demand system that is additive. This is accomplished through an extension of the Houthakker’s indirect addilog model that allows for all prices, not just the own-price of a good, to be included in each of the demand functions. The system is applied to a cross-sectional data set consisting of six exhaustive categories of consumption expenditure from the four quarterly BLS consumer expenditure surveys for 1996 augmented with price data collected in quarterly cost-of-living surveys conducted by ACCRA. I am grateful to Sean McNamara of ACCRA for making EXCEL files of ACCRA surveys available to me and to the Cardon Chair Endowment in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Arizona for financial support. Construction of data sets and econometric estimation have all been done in SAS.

An Investigation of the Composition of Iran's Import Demand: Capital, Intermediate and Consumer Goods during 1978-2004

The objective of this study has been to develop a typical specification of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) for Iran’s composition of imports including capital, intermediate and consumer goods. Accordingly, we first test the hypotheses that import demand is homothetic, homogeneous, symmetric, and depends on domestic prices. Then, we estimate the long-run elasticities of the composition o...

Unobserved Preference Heterogeneity in Demand Using Generalized Random Coefficients

We model unobserved preference heterogeneity in demand systems as random Barten scales in utility functions. These Barten scales appear as random coefficients multiplying prices in demand functions. Consumer demands are nonlinear in prices and may have unknown functional structure. We therefore prove identification of additive Generalized Random Coefficients models, defined as additive nonparam...

The impact of rice imports on domestic consumer welfare using the inverse demand system

Rice is the second strategic product after wheat and one of the most widely consumed food products in the country. Population growth, consumption and growing demand, price fluctuations and welfare effects due to changes in the amount and price of rice require the attention and planning and foresight of policymakers and the countrychr('39')s planning system. In this study, in the framework of in...

Investigation of the Effect of Natural Disasters on Household Demand Using an EASI Demand System

In recent centuries, many natural disasters such as floods and droughts have appeared and have had many adverse effects on many countries. Natural disaster is one of the major environmental challenges in the world and has serious socioeconomic consequences in countries. Evidence points to the fact that these natural disasters have a significant negative impact on crop yield, food security, ther...
